The
Urhobo people with a population in
excess of two million are the 5th
largest ethnic group in Nigeria. They
are native to the central portion
of Delta State – lowland with
floodplains and swamps of the oil-rich
Niger Delta. They share borders with
Bini, Ukwuani, Isoko, Ijaw and Itsekiri
ethnic nationalities. While the Urhobo
nation is the 5th largest ethnic group
in Nigeria, they constitute the largest
single ethnic group in Delta State.
The
Urhobo nation comprises twenty-two
clans and/or kingdoms with a common
eponymous ancestor. Other than common
blood ancestry, the kingdoms are further
bound together by culture, marriage,
occupation, geography and politics.
The clans that make up the Urhobo
nation are: Agbarha, Agbarha-Ame (Agbassa),
Agbarho, Agbon, Arhavwarien, Avwraka,
Eghwu, Ephron-oto, Evwreni, Idjerhe,
Oghara, Ogor, Okere, Okparabe, Okpe,
Olomu, Orogun, Udu, Ughelli, Ughievwen,
Ughwerun, and Uvwie. Depending on
the Urhobo Kingdom, the king, clan
head or traditional ruler is called
the Ovie or Orodje or Osuivie, Okobaro,
Okpako or Okpara-Uku. For example,
the king of Okpe Kingdom is called
Orodje and the king of Ughelli is
called Ovie. More...
